The Austrian government has announced plans to restrict social media for teenagers.
The Austrian authorities intend to ban the use of social networks by children under the age of 14. This was reported on March 27 by the Reuters news agency, citing a statement from the country's ruling parties.
It is noted that members of the Cabinet of Ministers from the three ruling parties announced an agreement on a draft law aimed at protecting children from "addictive algorithms" and destructive content.
"In the future, we will resolutely protect children and young people from the negative influence of social media," the agency quoted Andreas Babler, Vice Chancellor of Austria from the Social Democratic Party.
He added that the risks that online platforms brought to the life and development of Austrian youth "have been ignored for quite a long time." Now the Austrian government intends to resist this, concluded Babler.
The Times newspaper reported on February 16 that the UK authorities may impose a ban on the use of social networks for teenagers under the age of 16 as early as 2026. In addition, the Cabinet of Ministers intends to oblige Internet platforms to set limits on the time that minors spend in services with endless scrolling of content.
