In the United States, a nurse was sentenced to prison after she entered into an intimate relationship with a participant in a court program for people with drug addiction, and then falsely accused him of sexual assault. This was reported on March 3 by the New York Post (NYP).
"The harm caused to Miss Knutson was profound and significant. She not only violated the sacred trust between the patient and the nurse, but also aggravated it by falsely accusing the patient of sexual abuse," the NYP quoted the district attorney as saying.
As the court found, Melissa Knutson repeatedly had sexual relations with one of the patients undergoing treatment for addiction in 2022. As part of her official duties, she had to administer the drug used in therapy to the man.
According to the newspaper, after this became known, the nurse stated that the patient had allegedly sexually assaulted her. According to her, she did not talk about it because she was afraid of the consequences in the form of threats to her or her family.
It is clarified that during the investigation, messages were examined, where it was clear that it was the woman who was the initiator and, in case of disclosure, promised the patient to deny everything that happened between them.
Melissa later admitted that she had lied to avoid responsibility for her actions, the newspaper said.
The court found Knutson guilty and sentenced her to 18 months in prison followed by a two-year supervision period.
