Vision loss can be signaled by early symptoms, which many people often mistake for normal eye fatigue. On March 8, Olesya Pshenichkina, a specialist at the Vision ophthalmological center, told Izvestia about which signs appear first and in which cases it is necessary to consult a doctor.

According to the doctor, it's usually not the acuity itself that changes first, but the "endurance" of the eyes. They get tired faster, tension appears in the evening, and the text is more difficult to keep in focus. After the screen, the picture may become slightly blurry. Dryness and a feeling of sand are often added, which makes the hand reach out to rub the eyelids.

"In parallel, there are household compensations. A person brightens the phone screen, selects a large font, pushes the text further away, sits closer to the monitor or tries to choose a place closer to the cinema. These little things are usually not about character habits. This is a way to get the same clarity without a new correction," said Pshenichkina.

In addition, she emphasized that squinting works as a simple "sharpness adjustment." When a person squints, the aperture becomes smaller and the image appears clearer. Therefore, regular squinting may indicate insufficient vision correction, astigmatism, or dry eye syndrome.

As Pshenichkina emphasized, rapid fatigue often consists of several reasons. Prolonged close-up work, especially with screens, provokes rarer blinking, the tear film dries out faster, there is a burning sensation, sand, lacrimation and redness. Also, if the glasses or lenses are not accurately matched or have not been updated for a long time, have scratched glasses, the focus has to be "squeezed out", and the tension increases. Put the squeeze on the glasses or lenses.

According to the ophthalmologist, people often ignore symptoms such as floating "flies", periodic flashes of light, halos, sudden decrease in image clarity or episodes of double vision. Sometimes there is also a desire to cover one eye when reading, especially if such manifestations occur from time to time. Many people perceive these signs as ordinary fatigue or age-related changes and expect them to disappear on their own.

"The riskiest mistake is to ignore sudden new flashes, a sharp increase in flies and the feeling of a curtain or shadow in the field of vision. This may be a sign of retinal problems, and speed is important here," concluded Pshenichkina.

On March 4, Olga Miroshnichenko, an ophthalmologist of the highest category at the Center for Vision Restoration Clinic, said that cataracts are one of the most common diseases in people over 50 years of age, which, without treatment, can lead to complete loss of vision. According to the specialist, cataracts do not respond to conservative treatment. Drops and physiotherapy are not able to eliminate clouding of the lens, so the only effective way to restore vision remains surgery — removal of the affected lens followed by implantation of an artificial lens.
