Committees for the release of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro have been set up in dozens of countries around the world, Dmitry Novikov, first deputy chairman of the State Duma's International Affairs Committee, told Izvestia. They are sometimes called committees of solidarity with Venezuela.

"These are New Zealand, Japan, China, Vietnam, the Philippines, India, Turkey, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Cuba, Canada, the United States, and most Latin American countries," Novikov stressed.

Contacts are currently being established with such committees at the parliamentary level.

"We are working to establish contacts with committees that are being set up in other countries. And we talked about it, in particular, at a video conference. It was a video conference with about 400 entry points connected around the world, and we are mainly talking about parliamentarians from different countries who participated in this video conference. The initiator was the National Assembly of Venezuela," the deputy said.

According to Novikov, the Public Committee for the Release of Maduro intends to hold actions in support of not only the president of Venezuela, but also other political prisoners, for example, the head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, and the mayor of Gyumri, Vardan Ghukasyan.

Maduro is being held in a temporary detention facility in Brooklyn, New York. The United States took the Venezuelan president out of the country during the invasion of Caracas in January 2026.

On February 23, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that Russia strongly urges Washington to immediately release the Venezuelan president and his wife, Celia Flores.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on February 2 that there could be no justification for what happened in Caracas on January 3, adding that it was a blatant and cynical violation of international law.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on January 15 that Maduro's abduction violates US international legal obligations. According to her, the arguments that the Venezuelan leader allegedly lost his immunity cannot be taken into account, since the politician was removed from his post during an illegal military operation.
