Mammologist, oncologist, plastic surgeon, PhD Eduard Mezhetsky warned that obesity increases the risk of breast cancer in women.

In conversation with Lenta.Ru On Thursday, February 26, he noted that obesity not only disrupts the body, but also increases the risk of breast cancer by 20-40%, especially in menopausal women.

According to the doctor, adipose tissue produces the enzyme aromatase, which is involved in the synthesis of estrogen, so as body weight increases, the level of this hormone increases, which can accelerate breast cell division and increase the likelihood of tumor changes.

He also noted that obesity reduces sensitivity to leptin— a hormone that regulates appetite, which increases its level. According to the expert, excess leptin can stimulate the growth of tumor cells, reduce the effectiveness of chemotherapy and promote metastasis.

In addition, the oncologist added that overweight people develop chronic inflammation associated with the destruction of fat cells, which also increases the risk of malignancy.

Bariatric surgeon Pavel Biryukov told Izvestia on February 18 that diets rarely produce sustainable results in obese people, as the body turns on defense mechanisms and slows down metabolism. He added that obesity almost never has a single cause.

Oncologist Andrey Nefedov on February 5, in an interview with RT, named products whose abuse can lead to cancer. According to him, processed meat (sausages, ham, bacon, corned beef) is a proven carcinogen.

In January, Gennady Onishchenko, an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and deputy president of the Russian Academy of Education, said that obesity could displace oncology in the list of the most dangerous diseases. The academician drew attention to the understanding of obesity — it is not just fatness, but a medical diagnosis that is increasingly being given to Russians. The main threat it poses is the development of diabetes mellitus, Moscow 24 notes.

Earlier, Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko said that people with normal weight have a 40% reduced risk of developing gallbladder cancer. According to the minister, it is better to exclude sausages from the diet and reduce the consumption of red meat. You should also eat more vegetables and fewer sweet fruits, according to the Moscow City News agency.
