Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladislav Geraskevich, who was disqualified at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, demanded that Soviet athlete Sergei Bubka be stripped of the title of Hero of Ukraine. He stated this on February 26, speaking in the Verkhovna Rada.

"We have several representatives from Ukraine who are in the IOC. Now I'm talking about Mr. Bubka, who still holds the title of Hero of Ukraine. And in fact, I am ashamed that he holds this title. He shouldn't be wearing it. A man is systematically destroying Ukraine, <...> he allows Russian flags in the organizations he heads," the Ukrainian UNN news agency quoted Geraskevich as saying.

The athlete called for measures to be taken to deprive Sergei Bubka of the award and impose sanctions on him.

Mikhail Degtyarev, Minister of Sports and head of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC), announced on February 18 that more than 250 athletes had been killed and injured during his training. The minister commented on the scandal at the Olympic Games in Italy with Geraskevich, who wanted to perform in a helmet with the image of dead Ukrainian athletes.

On February 12, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced the disqualification of Ukrainian skeleton racer Geraskevich from the 2026 Olympic Games. The athlete was suspended due to non-compliance with equipment requirements, including the use of a prohibited helmet, despite discussions with representatives of the IOC and the Ukrainian delegation.
