- The media learned about the EU's plans to cancel Hungary's veto by promising supplies via Druzhba
The European Union (EU) intends to cancel Hungary's veto on condition of resuming oil supplies through Druzhba so that Ukraine can receive a loan of €90 billion from European countries. This was reported by the newspaper on February 26, citing sources.
"Four diplomats and a senior official <...> argued that the leaders should focus on pressure and persuasion so that Budapest would abandon its veto," the article says.
According to the newspaper, the EU "does not have time for a legal option" to overcome Budapest's veto.
At the same time, it clarifies that the creation of a new document containing a promise to restore Russian oil flows through the pipeline is a "more realistic way to circumvent the problem" with a veto.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto announced on February 23 that the country had blocked the 20th package of sanctions against Russia and the allocation of a loan to Ukraine worth €90 billion due to Kiev's shutdown of the Druzhba oil pipeline. He also noted that Hungary regards Kiev's suspension of the transit of Russian oil through Druzhba as an encroachment on its sovereignty.
Prior to that, Szijjarto also stated that the European Commission was acting in the interests of Ukraine, not the EU member states. The minister stressed that Kiev had begun "explicit political blackmail of Hungary" by blocking oil supplies through the pipeline.
