Chairman of the Human Rights Council under the President of the Russian Federation (HRC) On February 25, Valery Fadeev took the initiative to verify the claim of writer Sergei Dovlatov about "4 million denunciations" during the Stalinist repressions.

"Indeed, 4 million denunciations were written, and if there were denunciations, who wrote them? Millions of citizens, or specially trained informers, or were they forced into the NKVD? If this is not the case, let's expose her, because this is a very strong political phrase," RBC quoted him as saying.

At a meeting of the scientific council of the Russian Military Historical Society, Fadeev stated that there is no agreed position in the society on the assessment of the Stalin era.

In his opinion, the historical community should give a professional assessment of these data and establish how they correspond to archival materials, as well as determine who exactly became the authors of such appeals. He noted that the mentioned wording is actively replicated and is often used as an established fact.

In September 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin noted the need to depoliticize Joseph Stalin's contribution to Victory. He noted that no one in the country forgets how many problems there were related to repression, and these facts will not be erased from history.
