Declaring his desire to exhaust Russia economically and militarily, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz should think about his country and make Germans hostages of his lack of professionalism. This was announced on February 20 by Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin.

"The sanctions have hit their initiators like a boomerang. The German economy has been stagnating for three years. As a result, Germany has moved from fourth place in the world in terms of GDP at purchasing power parity to sixth," Volodin wrote on his Telegram channel.

According to the speaker of the State Duma, during his time in power, Mertz should have realized the impossibility of defeating a nuclear power on the battlefield. The parliamentarian noted that the sanctions policy of European states primarily affected their own economies.

He stressed that the German industry was currently uncompetitive, as its advantages were linked to Russian energy resources. The chairman of the lower house of parliament also advised the German chancellor to solve the problems of his own country.

"The funds stolen from our country will have to be returned. As Chancellor of Germany, Merz should understand this and not make citizens hostages of his lack of professionalism," Volodin added.

The day before, Merz said that the crisis in Ukraine can be resolved only in the event of a critical depletion of the resources of one of the parties to the confrontation. At the same time, Merz expressed skepticism about the possibility of an early diplomatic settlement of the situation. In addition, the politician called it almost impossible to normalize his relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Bild newspaper, citing data from an INSA institute survey, reported on January 6 that Merz was in the penultimate place in the ranking of the 20 most popular German politicians. It was noted that on a scale from 0 to 10, the Chancellor was given an average score of 3.5 points. The politician also criticized the attitude of Germans to work and urged the country's residents to work more. He added that Swiss residents work an average of 200 hours longer per year than Germans, although there are no "genetic differences" between the countries' citizens.
