The main danger when washing a car in winter is associated not so much with low temperatures as with sudden changes in heat and cold. Alexander Kornev, head of the Department for Work with Importers at Gazprombank Autoleasing, told Izvestia on February 19.

He explained that the paintwork suffers from a sudden transition from frost to a warm room, especially if heated water is used. In such conditions, microcracks may appear on the surface. Kornev recommended letting the car stay warm for at least 10-15 minutes before washing to reduce the temperature contrast. For this reason, winter washing at self-service stations can be more risky.

"You need to wash your car as often in winter as in summer. Reagents are poured onto the body and settle in a crust in hard-to-reach places, gradually damaging the paintwork and metal. High-quality washing will help to remove dangerous deposits. The more often you go to the car wash, the less likely it is to leave a source of corrosion on the car. Washing after the winter season deserves special attention. Order it with a thorough washing of the entire suspension and bottom," said the auto expert.

According to him, special "winter" shampoos are not required, but it is useful to use formulations with a hydrophobic effect or apply liquid wax. This helps to reduce the buildup of dirt and reagents.

Special attention should be paid to drying the car, Kornev added. After washing, wipe the body, doorways, handles and mirrors to avoid freezing water. If moisture remains on the seals, the doors may freeze, and when opened, there is a risk of damaging the rubber. Frozen water can also affect the suspension or braking system elements, which will lead to creaking and deterioration of the mechanisms.

In addition, the specialist advises to regularly treat the rubber seals with a special lubricant and have a lock defroster on hand. In winter, it is important to thoroughly flush the wheel arches and sills — this is where reagents most often accumulate.

For additional protection of the body, a protective film can be considered, but it should be carried out only after all the foci of corrosion have been eliminated. Otherwise, the processes of metal destruction under the coating may accelerate.

On February 12, Konstantin Ershov, an auto expert and ROSSKO technical specialist, spoke about the main mistakes when starting the battery in the cold. He explained that at low temperatures, the battery capacity drops, and thick oil makes it difficult to start. If the engine does not catch on the first or second attempt, excessive load quickly drains the battery and can lead to its deep discharge.
