- The lawyer advised to contact the bank's staff in case of an erroneous money transfer.
In order not to become a victim of fraud, money mistakenly transferred to the card by an outsider must be returned with the help of bank employees. Alexander Khaminsky, a lawyer and head of the law enforcement center in Moscow and the Moscow Region, warned about this on February 19.
"If money was transferred to you by mistake, the main thing is not to spend it and not transfer it back yourself using the specified banking details, so as not to become a victim of fraudsters. Contact the bank, report the error and issue a refund through the bank's staff — this will protect you from accusations of illegal enrichment," the expert advised in an interview with RIA Novosti.
Khaminsky warned against checking card receipts through SMS notifications: fraudsters know how to fake them. You can only trust the information provided in the banking application.
The lawyer also recommended never to return the money received by mistake according to the details sent by the allegedly "mistaken" owners of the finances.
"If you transfer money to the banking details specified by the scammers, you may become an accomplice in a money laundering scheme, and after the transfer, the scammers may begin to threaten to disclose information, for example, about the illegal financing of terrorism," Khaminsky stressed.
If the scammers still managed to steal the money, the lawyer advised to contact the police immediately.
On February 18, the head of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation, Elvira Nabiullina, said that Russian banks suspend about 330,000 suspicious transactions every month. She also noted that criminals regularly adapt to new cyber defense measures. According to her, the phone remains the main channel of fraudulent attacks.
