Fertilizer waste disposal projects to be launched in Russian regions
Russian regions will launch fertilizer waste disposal projects. This was reported to Izvestia on February 19 by the Russian Environmental Operator (REO).
We are talking about regions where there are objects of accumulation and formation of a by—product of the production of phosphorous fertilizers - phosphogypsum. These are Bashkortostan, the Republic of Crimea, Kuban, Stavropol, Vologda, Kirov, Leningrad, Saratov and Tambov regions, as well as the Moscow region.
According to the government's order, the authorities of these regions must draw up a list of organizational measures and projects to promote the utilization of phosphogypsum by June 2026, taking into account regional specifics.
"In Russia, fertilizers are produced using phosphogypsum, and land reclamation works are carried out. The material is also becoming an important resource for road construction," the REO said.
Its use not only increases the strength of coatings, but also helps to involve large—scale industrial waste in a closed-loop economy - this is one example of how waste is transformed into a resource, while simultaneously solving environmental and infrastructure development problems, they concluded.
On February 17, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment proposed to develop a system for regulating the processing of oil-containing waste. Denis Butsaev, Deputy Head of the ministry, reported that the agency is preparing a regulatory framework to encourage the actual disposal of waste and the introduction of a federal register of responsible processors, unified technological standards and self-regulatory mechanisms. According to him, the tasks include turning the oil-based waste processing industry into a modern and environmentally efficient segment of the circular economy by 2030.
