- Moscow approves tasks for the development of physical education and sports for the year
The main tasks for the development of publicly accessible physical culture and sports in Moscow for 2026 have been approved, Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on the MAX channel. Among the priorities are the holding of more than 200 major sporting events, the construction and reconstruction of dozens of infrastructure facilities, the construction of new playgrounds and recreation areas by the water.
Sobyanin noted that the number of Muscovites who systematically engage in physical education and sports has grown to 6.8 million people in 2025. "15 years ago, this figure was more than three times less — 2.1 million residents," wrote the mayor of the capital.
In 2026, the city plans to host more than 200 major sporting events, including a Large running Festival, Football Day, Basketball Day, Chess Day and the Moscow Marathon of Training, the mayor said. In addition, it is planned to complete the construction and reconstruction of 47 infrastructure facilities, the construction of 23 all-season sports grounds of a new format, 11 flagship and 21 regional and district ski trails, as well as 15 recreation areas by the water.
In 2025, 175 major mass sporting events were held in the city. Last year, 41 sports facilities were put into operation in the capital, including 12 capital facilities and 29 prefabricated sports complexes.
In February, four sports complexes were opened in Moscow after reconstruction. The Coral was renovated in the Krasnoselsky district, the Pearl sports complex in Mitin, Penguins in Biryulyovo Zapadny and Dmitrovsky in the district of the same name were also reopened.
