German Foreign Minister Johann Vadefuhl on February 16 called on France to increase defense spending, as current efforts are not enough to achieve European sovereignty.

"(French President Emmanuel Macron — Ed.) has repeatedly and rightly spoken about our desire for European sovereignty. Anyone who talks about this should act accordingly in their country. <...> Unfortunately, the efforts of the French Republic are not enough for this purpose," the French newspaper Le Monde quoted him as saying.

He specified that the defense spending of each party to the agreement should be at least 5%. He also said he was looking forward to Macron's next speech, where the president would comment on these strategic issues.

On February 11, Polish President Karol Nawrocki admitted that Germany could use the European Union's (EU) SAFE militarization program to cash in on it. He also demanded a report from Berlin on what the money would be spent on under SAFE.

On the same day, protests were held in Germany, which were attended by hundreds of people opposed to the policy of representatives of the German government aimed at militarization of the country. The demonstrators, as one of the protesters explained, show the need to take a course against the "imperialist policy" of NATO.
