OpenAI has accused its competitor DeepSeek of illegally using its technology to develop a new generation of chatbots. This was reported by Bloomberg on February 12, citing information from an internal memo.

It follows from the note that DeepSeek uses the so-called distillation technique to extract results from American AI models and train its R1 model. OpenAI claims that such actions by the company pose a threat not only to their business, but also to national security. In particular, distillation allows Chinese developers to bypass the protection developed by OpenAI and use the results of American technology to create similar capabilities.

According to representatives of OpenAI, such methods can lead to the use of AI in areas with high risks, such as biology and chemistry, which is dangerous for security.

"In distillation, one AI model uses the results of the other's work to train and develop similar capabilities," the article says.

According to OpenAI, the Chinese company uses hidden routes to circumvent restrictions and obtain data from AI models. In response to such actions, the US launched an investigation and took measures to restrict China's access to advanced AI chips.

Bloomberg reported on January 31 that Nvidia had confirmed its participation in financing the American artificial intelligence product development company OpenAI, but the investment amount would be less than $100 billion. At the same time, the head of the chipmaker directly confirmed that the amount would not be comparable to the previously announced $100 billion — Nvidia is not going to adhere to this figure, which was mentioned when announcing the strategic partnership with OpenAI in September 2025.

On January 30, Reuters learned about China's approval of the purchase of Nvidia H200 chips by Deepseek. Despite strong demand from Chinese companies and approval of exports from the United States, Beijing's reluctance to allow imports has become a major obstacle to supply.
