Ice and freezing rain paralyzed the operation of Berlin airport
Berlin-Brandenburg Airport has completely stopped flights due to dangerous weather conditions. This was reported on February 6 by a correspondent of Izvestia.
It is noted that restrictions on takeoffs and landings began on Thursday, February 5. Airlines began rescheduling flights and offering connections, which were later canceled as well, offering passengers to transfer to trains.
It is currently unknown when the operation of the air harbor will be resumed. The airport administration explained that in such weather conditions, the risk to flight safety increases dramatically: the braking distance of aircraft increases and steering during taxiing and landing becomes more complicated. Airport services are currently cleaning and treating the coatings, as well as constantly checking their condition.
The German Weather Service predicts that the weather may improve slightly during the day, but drizzling rain is possible again in the evening, sometimes icy. Fog and ice are expected on Saturday night, February 7, which may complicate the situation again.
The New York Times reported on January 7 that a large-scale transport collapse had occurred in Europe due to adverse weather conditions. The air hubs in Northern Europe were the hardest hit. About 2,000 flights were canceled at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport in a few days, and rail service to the airport was temporarily suspended.
Before that, on January 5, it was reported that traffic jams in Paris and the suburbs due to snowfall and the departure of vacationers reached a record length of 900 km. The A-6, A-7 and A-10 highways in the south direction were especially busy, as the first Saturday of January is traditionally considered "black" in France due to the mass departure of tourists.
