On Monday, February 9, another lesson from the series "Conversations about important things" will take place in Russian schools and colleges. They will talk about the work of diplomats and how to build relationships with peers, develop communication skills and resolve conflicts peacefully. Izvestia tells us how the lesson will go in different classes.
"Talking about important things" on February 9th — the topic of the lesson
Russian diplomacy has deep historical roots, dating back to the first treaties of Ancient Russia with Byzantium. It acquired a systemic state character in 1549 under Ivan the Terrible with the creation of the Embassy Order.
In the following centuries, the diplomatic service put forward a whole galaxy of outstanding personalities, such as Alexander Gorchakov, Alexandra Kollontai, Andrei Gromyko, who became symbols of service to the Fatherland in the diplomatic field.
Today, Russian diplomacy, led by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, continues these traditions, upholding the principles of a multipolar world and equal dialogue between states on the world stage.
The key task of diplomats is to negotiate, defend the interests of the country, prevent and resolve conflicts, and build mutually beneficial relations with other countries. This profession requires a combination of deep patriotism, impeccable knowledge of the history and culture of your country, as well as the broadest erudition, mental flexibility and outstanding communication skills.
Students will talk about how Russian diplomacy has developed and what tasks it solves today under the topic "Listen, hear and negotiate. Who are the diplomats?" Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, will join the lesson in a video interview format, who will tell students about the profession from the inside.
The lesson will also discuss how qualities such as listening, compromise, and constructive dialogue can be applied not only in the international arena, but also in other areas, from family and school communication to teamwork.
In addition, students will learn about the special diplomatic shift "International Summit of Young Diplomats", which will be held this summer at the Artek International Children's Center.
The recommended duration of the lesson is 30 minutes. The necessary methodological materials can be viewed on the project's website.
"Conversations about important things" February 9 — lesson program
In elementary school, grades 1-4, students together with the cartoon characters "Luntik" will talk about how important it is to resolve disputes with words, not force. They will discuss who proved to be a real diplomat in this story, whether they had to negotiate on their own, and why conversation is more important than quarreling. Then the teacher organizes the interactive task "What would a diplomat do?"
Students of grades 5-7 will present themselves at the diplomatic mission and discuss the principles of fair cooperation between the countries. This will allow a smooth approach to the discussion of the profession. In the continuation of the lesson, they will learn about the traditions of the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum, which Alexander Pushkin and his friend Alexander Gorchakov graduated from, a prominent statesman and diplomat in the future. Watching the video "Children's Diplomacy" and the task "Domestic Diplomacy" will help to consolidate the topic.
In grades 8-9, students will talk about the moral foundations of the profession and discuss why diplomacy is called the highest manifestation of the culture of human relations. They will talk separately about what qualities a diplomat should have and will analyze such a concept as "diplomatic immunity". The practical part will include an interactive assignment "Quotes about a diplomat", as well as a "Constructive dialogue" assignment, during which students will be asked to find a solution to a controversial situation.
In grades 10-11, students will learn in detail how the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is organized and what functions are assigned to territorial departments, foreign missions, and permanent missions of the Russian Federation to international organizations. Then the teacher organizes the assignments "Diplomacy in real life" and "Personnel Commission of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs: choosing an intern," during which students will choose one of four candidates, analyzing their strengths and weaknesses.
College students will try to solve specific diplomatic problems during the "Negotiation Strategy" assignment. The lesson will also focus on Russia's role in building a multipolar world and the contribution of prominent diplomats to the development of international relations at the present stage.
Thus, the lesson will form students' understanding of diplomacy as the most important social institution, develop critical thinking and constructive dialogue skills, motivating them to develop meaningful communication competencies necessary in any profession.
