- Virologist Companets assessed the risk of an outbreak of smallpox in monkeys in Russia
An outbreak of monkeypox is unlikely in Russia, as the virus is poorly transmitted between humans. This was announced on February 4 by Galina Companets, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the FEFU Department of Fundamental Medicine.
"Cases have been described in humans, outbreaks have been described, but this is not a very common disease. Because most often animal infections occur in animals. You don't have to wait for a big flash. There shouldn't be a very rapid spread here," the RIA Novosti expert said.
According to her, the virus is transmitted only through close contact through damaged skin or mucous membranes.
"Therefore, there is no danger of an outbreak of the virus," Companets added.
On February 3, the N.F. Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology announced the development of a safe vaccine against smallpox in monkeys using genetic engineering. The new drug will avoid the serious side effects of existing vaccines and will be applicable to people with immunodeficiency and other vulnerable groups.
