Macron announced preparations for contacts with Putin on a technical level

French President Emmanuel Macron announced on February 3 that Paris was preparing for contacts with Russian leader Vladimir Putin at a technical level.

"Preparations are underway, and therefore discussions on this issue are underway at the technical level. This is being done transparently and in consultation with President [of Ukraine Vladimir] Zelensky and our main European colleagues," he told reporters during a trip to the department of Upper Son.

He added that France intends to continue to support Ukraine, which is currently experiencing pressure on the energy sector in the winter cold.

Putin has convened a military-technical cooperation commission to discuss new export markets and plans for 2026.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on February 2 that at the moment there is no specific information on the organization of contacts between Putin and Macron. The press secretary of the Russian president noted that the idea of the need for dialogue is sound and Russia shares it.

In turn, State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova pointed out that contacts between the leaders of Russia and France would make sense only if the French leader was ready for a constructive dialogue.
