Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin congratulated veterans of the Great Patriotic War and residents of the capital on the 83rd anniversary of the defeat of Nazi troops in the Battle of Stalingrad. He stressed that the legacy of the winners is a solid foundation for the country's new military achievements.

"The victory in the Battle of Stalingrad marked the beginning of a radical turning point in the Great Patriotic War and strengthened the faith of our people and the entire planet that World War II would end in defeated Berlin," the mayor's congratulatory telegram says.

He noted that the main characters of the fateful battle were the soldiers of the Red Army. New generations cherish the memory of their feat and "what an incredible effort and at what cost they managed to turn the invaders back to the west," Sobyanin stressed. He wished the veterans good spirits, health, prosperity, peaceful skies and all the best.

The Battle of Stalingrad lasted more than six months and was one of the largest battles of the Great Patriotic War. The fighting took place on the territory of the modern Voronezh, Rostov, Volgograd regions and the Republic of Kalmykia. The Red Army managed to stop the grouping of Nazi troops, block it, surround it and repel the counteroffensive. The victory in the Battle of Stalingrad marked the beginning of the interception of the strategic initiative by the Soviet command.
