"I never planned to make Greenland the 51st state. I want to make Canada the 51st state. Greenland will become the 52nd state. Venezuela may take 53rd place," the newspaper quoted Trump as saying.

The head of the White House, as specified in the text, joked throughout the evening, and then, in an interview with reporters at the end of the event, he called his performance "comedic."

Yulia Boguslavskaya, a senior lecturer at the Department of American Studies at the Faculty of International Relations of St. Petersburg State University, PhD in Political Science, told Izvestia on January 29 that Trump's desire to annex Greenland to the United States is designed for the long term. The potential expansion of the country to another state is necessary for the American president, in her opinion, from the point of view of ensuring national security and mining.

Trump said on January 21 that Canada exists because of the United States. He clarified that this state receives a lot of "free buns" from Washington.
