- The media learned about the West's desire to create an alliance on critically important minerals
Ministers from about 20 Western countries are going to meet in Washington to discuss the possible creation of an alliance on critical minerals. This was reported on February 1 by The Guardian newspaper.
"Ministers from the United States, the EU, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia and New Zealand will meet in Washington this week to discuss a strategic alliance on critical minerals," the article says.
According to the newspaper, the summit is seen as "a step towards restoring transatlantic ties," undermined by a year of conflict with US President Donald Trump. This is the second summit on this issue in a month, which is attended by about 20 countries, including members of the G7.
According to the publication, one of the topics for discussion will be calls for the United States to guarantee a minimum price for critically important minerals and rare earths. The meeting in Washington was convened by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who, like other representatives of the countries, hopes to increase the volume of supplies from outside China as soon as possible.
On January 25, the Financial Times (FT) newspaper reported that the administration of US President Donald Trump plans to invest $1.6 billion in the American company USA Rare Earth, which will be the largest public investment in the private sector to ensure the supply of critically important minerals.
