Mattresses made from textile waste began to be produced in Russia: more than 3 million square meters were made from 700 tons of recyclables in 2025. m fillers for upholstered furniture and mattresses. Old clothes are recycled into so-called regenerated fiber. This was reported to Izvestia by the Russian Environmental Operator (REO) on January 29.

Modern technologies make it possible to obtain durable fillers with excellent performance characteristics — the materials have excellent elasticity, quickly restore their shape after deformation and last a long time, the REO specified.

"This project directly works towards the formation of a closed-loop economy in the country. Thanks to such enterprises, you can see how old things take on a new life, rather than filling waste disposal sites," Denis Butsaev, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, told Izvestia.

In addition to mattress filler, it is used to produce sound insulation materials for cars and cotton wool. In total, this kind of waste is processed in the country at 20 enterprises with a total capacity of about 227 thousand tons per year. Rags, yarn, gloves, insulation materials, acoustic panels, and the like are mainly produced from textile waste.

Last December, the Leningrad Region discussed how effectively the entire Northwestern Federal District copes with the task of recycling garbage. Every year, the region accumulates about 4.5 million tons of waste, which is a tenth of the volume of the entire country. According to Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Patrushev, it is now important not only to create waste management facilities, but also to develop the market for secondary raw materials.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
