Fish have accumulated in European ports after the new IT system for detecting illegal fishing turned out to be overloaded. This was reported on January 28 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper.

"Fish have accumulated in European ports after a new IT system for detecting illegal fishing turned out to be overloaded, prompting warnings of serious disruptions in the industry and potential shortages," the publication says.

According to the newspaper, the new CATCH system, which began operating on January 10, requires importers to manually fill in hundreds of information items contained in ship certificates in order to ensure the legality of fishing.

According to one of the major importers, dozens of containers with frozen and canned fish were blocked in Rotterdam, as the system handles only about half of the cargo. According to him, the responsible authorities do not respond to requests for help.

In addition to data entry, which takes several hours, importers from countries without digital registries need to download a catch certificate. It is noted that the European Union (EU) countries have switched to digital certificates, but many trading partners have not yet done so, which forces importers to independently process documents.

German Zverev, President of the All-Russian Association of Fisheries Enterprises, Entrepreneurs and Exporters (VARPE), announced on December 19 last year that in 2025 Russia had increased the supply of fish and seafood to Europe and Japan. According to him, last year the growth of supplies to Europe increased by 15% in terms of money. The expert added that Russian supplies to the segment of the global market with unfriendly regimes amounted to $2.8 billion, which is about 40% of the total volume of Russian exports.
