Death toll due to snow storm in the USA increased to 51
In the United States, the death toll from a large-scale snowstorm has increased to 51 people. This was reported on January 28 by NBC News.
"Millions of residents from the Great Lakes to the Gulf coast have been notified of extremely low temperatures, while communities in the eastern third of the United States are recovering from a powerful winter storm that killed at least 51 people," the publication says.
According to the TV channel, eight weather-related deaths were recorded in Louisiana and Tennessee. In Kentucky, a 72-year-old woman died of hypothermia, and another person, an inmate, died while clearing snow and ice at a correctional complex. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said 10 people were found dead on the streets of the city.
According to the Poweroutage service, the number of households left without electricity due to bad weather exceeds 400 thousand. The critical situation remains in Tennessee, Mississippi and Louisiana — 136 thousand, 125 thousand and 80 thousand houses without electricity, respectively.
Earlier it was reported that 14 US states and the District of Columbia have declared a state of emergency due to the impending extreme cold and heavy snowfall.
ABC News TV channel, citing data from the National Weather Service, reported on January 26 that in some places the height of the snow cover formed in the eastern United States is 40 cm. The bad weather, as it was emphasized, led to the cancellation of over 11 thousand flights at that time.
