Some U.S. allies are considering establishing closer ties with China in search of alternative markets. This was reported on January 27 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

"The US trading partners, disappointed by the unpredictable and pragmatic policy of the White House, are reviewing their relations with China in an effort to reduce their long—standing dependence on America," the publication says.

The article emphasizes that the country hopes for China to open up domestic markets, increase imports of foreign goods and invest in Western countries.

According to the newspaper, some allies of the United States, from Canada to Europe and South Korea, are considering the possibility of establishing relations with China. In particular, Canada is seeking to establish closer ties with China, and its Prime Minister Mark Carney visited Beijing earlier.

In addition, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is also planning to come there. He is expected to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, the first visit by a British prime minister to China in eight years.

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung recently said he wants to "fully restore" ties with China, and Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo is scheduled to meet with Xi Jinping in Beijing on January 27. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, according to preliminary information, will also visit China in February 2026.

According to experts, due to the unpredictability of the American administration, China is becoming "more necessary" for Western countries. It is noted that the trade duties imposed by US President Donald Trump and his recent attempts to take Greenland away from Denmark are prompting some countries to "reconsider their relations with Beijing."

For China, this could bring significant benefits, including "driving a wedge between the United States and some of its longest-standing allies," the WSJ added.

The day before, Carney said that Canada was not going to conclude a free trade agreement with China. According to him, the country respects its obligations under the trilateral agreement with the United States and Mexico, which requires any of the three countries to notify the other in advance if they intend to conclude a free trade agreement with a non-market country, in particular with China.

Prior to that, on January 24, Trump expressed his intention to impose 100% customs duties on Canada if Ottawa concludes a trade agreement with China. He added that the Canadian authorities will not be able to use their territory as a transit point for the supply of Chinese goods to the US market.

In addition, on January 22, the US president said that Canada preferred cooperation with China, which, in his opinion, would "eat them up" within a year.
