Catalonia suspends rail service after two train derailments
The authorities of Spanish Catalonia have suspended railway services in the region after two fatal train crashes. This was reported by Bloomberg on January 26.
"Rail services have been suspended in Catalonia, prolonging traffic disruptions for several days following two fatal accidents earlier this month that raised concerns about the safety of the Spanish railway system," the material says.
Local authorities recommended that citizens work from home and minimize unnecessary travel. The previous accidents on the railway have increased political pressure on the Spanish government, as well as raised questions about the safety and maintenance of the entire Spanish railway network.
In the Spanish province of Cordoba, on January 18, two trains heading from the southern city of Malaga to and from Madrid collided and derailed. At least 39 people were killed. The total number of victims of the train crash in Spain was 152 people. On January 19, the Spanish authorities declared three days of national mourning and promised to conduct a transparent investigation into the causes of the disaster.
