American airlines are trying to resume flights, many of which have been postponed or canceled due to the winter storm. This was reported by Bloomberg on January 26.
"In the United States, travelers are preparing for prolonged disruptions to airlines that are trying to restore their schedules after a severe winter storm that led to the largest number of flight cancellations since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic," the article says.
According to the agency, the strongest storm hit "vast territories of the south" and the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, effectively paralyzing the work of some of the country's busiest aviation hubs.
On the morning of January 25, more than 80% of flights were canceled at Newark Liberty (New Jersey), LaGuardia (New York) airports, as well as at John F. Kennedy (New York) and Ronald Reagan (Virginia) airports. The airlines said they were striving to "resume flights as soon as possible," but faced difficulties due to the continuing adverse weather.
"Prolonged low temperatures and icing conditions at airports, as well as on roads and highways, will create dangerous conditions for staff and passengers," writes Bloomberg.
On January 25 alone, 11.6 thousand flights were canceled in the United States. This day saw the largest number of flight cancellations since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Snow storm Fern, which hit the United States, affected more than 200 million people and led to disruptions at airports across the country and the cancellation of several thousand flights. Abnormal frosts led to the deaths of at least seven people. Among the dead were one person in Texas and a 19-year-old college student whose body was found a day after his disappearance.
On January 24, the American authorities warned of heavy snowfalls and a sharp drop in temperature. US President Donald Trump said that emergency services have been put on high alert.
On the same day, 14 US states and the District of Columbia declared a state of emergency due to the impending extreme cold and heavy snowfall. It is noted that an emergency has been declared in a wide area from Texas to New York State due to a powerful storm that is expected to hit the country over the weekend. In some areas, a sharp drop in temperature is predicted well below zero, which can trigger rare natural phenomena, including the destruction of trees due to severe frosts.
Prior to that, on January 22, it was noted that more than 235 million people in more than 40 US states from Arizona to Maine are on the path of a large-scale winter storm, which is expected to cover over 2,000 miles.
