Scammers create fictitious work chats in instant messengers in order to lure confidential data from company employees. This was announced on January 26 in the Department for the organization of the fight against the illegal use of information and communication technologies (UBK) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.

"The attackers carry out thorough preparations: they collect information about the victim's team in open sources and social networks, including names, positions and work relationships. This allows them to create a fictitious work chat with a high degree of trust," the department's Telegram channel says.

According to the Interior Ministry, one real employee of the company and several bots controlled by criminals are added to such a chat. Bots use real photos and names of colleagues, simulate a working discussion, confirm each other's actions, and demonstrate loyalty.

Then, under the guise of a supervisor or a responsible person, an urgent "official task" is set in the chat — for example, to transmit a confirmation code for "digitizing the archive" or performing another task, the UBK of the Ministry of Internal Affairs concludes.

Earlier, on January 25, it was reported that cases of sending fake messages on behalf of the Gosuslugi portal have become more frequent in Russia. Scammers use similar logos and personal appeals, while citizens are urged not to follow suspicious links and contact only official sources for information and help.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
