Russians have been warned about dangerous food storage packaging
Plastic food packaging without special labeling can pose a health threat due to the risk of migration of harmful substances into products. This was reported on January 24 by Gazeta.Ru" Ksenia Kuznetsova, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Food Safety at ROSBIOTECH University.
"The key risk lies in the potential migration (transfer) of chemicals from packaging into a food product. This process intensifies when heated, in contact with fats or acids, as well as during long—term storage," the expert explained.
According to her, plastics labeled PET 1, HDPE 2 and PP 5 are considered the safest when their conditions of use are met, while PVC, polystyrene and containers without labeling require extreme caution.
Kuznetsova also recommended using inert materials for heating and long-term storage.
Earlier, on January 10, it was reported that some products are not recommended to be stored in plastic containers, even if there are food labels. It was noted that prolonged storage of raw meat and fish is especially undesirable due to the risk of bacterial growth. Experts also drew attention to the dangers of storing acidic, fatty and highly aromatic foods, recommending glass or metal containers for these purposes.
