British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has withdrawn a bill on the transfer of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius due to disapproval from the United States. This was reported by The Telegraph on January 23.

"Consideration of the bill was postponed <...> after the Conservatives warned that it could violate the 60-year-old treaty with the United States, consolidating British sovereignty over the archipelago. [US President] Donald Trump opposed the Chagos deal," the publication said.

It is noted that according to the bill, the United Kingdom would transfer the archipelago to Mauritius and lease the Diego Garcia military base.

Earlier, on January 20, Trump announced the UK's plans to transfer the island of Diego Garcia to Mauritius. He added that Denmark and its European allies should then do the right thing by handing Greenland over to the United States in the interests of national security.

On August 10, The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported that the lease of the Chagos archipelago in the center of the Indian Ocean for the UK has increased to 35 billion pounds ($ 46.7 billion), which is 10 times more than promised by the country's Prime Minister Keir Starmer. It was noted at the time that the Prime Minister would abandon the islands in favor of the Diego Garcia military base, which was built there in the 1970s.
