The United States will send about 3,000 Marines to Norway to participate in the joint NATO Arctic exercises Cold Response 26, the Defense Blog reported on January 22.

"These exercises are aimed not only at preparing for today's threats. They are designed to build the capacity and strengthen the capabilities necessary to deter future aggression and protect our common interests," said Major General Daniel Shipley of the US Army.

The main purpose of the exercise is to test the ability of the U.S.—based Marine Task Force to quickly transfer personnel and equipment across the Atlantic, interact with host country forces, and conduct long-term operations in support of larger-scale NATO missions.

According to the organizers, more than 25,000 troops from 12 NATO countries will take part in the exercises, making them one of the largest training events for allies in the Far North in recent years.

The authors of the article note that as part of Cold Response 26, the US Air Force will use a wide range of military aircraft: P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft, F-35 fighter jets, KC-135 Stratotanker tanker aircraft and CV-22 Osprey tiltrotor aircraft.

Major international exercises Freezing Winds 25 with the participation of 11 NATO countries were held in the Baltic Sea on November 24. The exercises took place from November 24 to December 4 in the waters of the Gulf of Finland and the archipelago of Southern Finland. About 20 warships, supply vessels, as well as fighter aircraft, naval reconnaissance aircraft and helicopters were involved in the maneuvers.
