The introduction of retaliatory trade measures by the European Union (EU) against the United States in the amount of up to 93 billion euros will unleash a trade war, after which the Europeans will still have to give Greenland to the Americans. This opinion was expressed by Vasily Koltashov, head of the Center for Political and Economic Studies at the New Society Institute, on Monday, January 19.

"Most likely, [the Europeans] will give Greenland to the Americans, but they will do it in a form that will be democratic: a vote can be held, following which the idea of joining the United States will prevail. No one doubts that the Americans will drill Greenland ruthlessly, regardless of the environmental consequences," Koltashov stressed in a conversation with The Paragraph.

The political scientist also stressed that the introduction of duties on American goods by Brussels would hurt the European economy.

"The European Union is a weak opponent, very dependent on the American market, mainly living off it, so it doesn't cost the United States anything to knock it out in this game. At some point, American duties will be so increased, reaching hundreds of percent, that [European Commission President Ursula] von der Leyen will simply capitulate, and [US President Donald] Trump will get Greenland and whatever else he wants," Koltashov concluded.
