- The media learned about Macron's request to activate the EU's instrument against US coercion
French President Emmanuel Macron intends to request the activation of the European Union's "instrument against coercion" if the United States imposes new trade duties. This was reported on January 18 by Le Figaro with reference to the French leader.
"Macron, who will be in contact with his European colleagues all day, will ask for the "activation of the EU's anti—pressure instrument" if the threats of customs surcharges promised by US President Donald Trump are fulfilled," the article says.
According to the publication, this tool, which requires a majority of EU votes to be launched, allows, among other things, freezing access to European public procurement or blocking certain investments.
In addition, as noted by the French leader's entourage, American trade threats "call into question the validity of the agreement" on tariffs concluded between the EU and the United States last July.
On January 17, Trump announced that Washington was imposing duties of 10% with the possibility of increasing up to 25% on a number of European countries due to the situation around Greenland. Starting from February 1, 2026, tariffs will apply to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Great Britain, the Netherlands and Finland.
