Alexander Ovechkin, a Russian forward for the Washington Capitals hockey club, has again refused to take part in the National Hockey League (NHL) campaign in support of LGBT people (the international movement is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and banned). This was announced on January 18 by the RMNB portal.

During the pregame warm-up before the regular season match against Florida, Ovechkin took to the ice with the traditional white wrap on his stick. At the same time, several other players from both teams wrapped rainbow ribbons around their sticks, according to the NHL's initiative.

During the match itself, Washington lost to its rivals, the score of the meeting was 2:5. As the newspaper notes, the Russian hockey player's refusal to use rainbow symbols was a continuation of the resonant situation of previous seasons. Then the NHL introduced the mandatory use of themed equipment, which was opposed by a group of Russian players led by Ovechkin. Later, other hockey players joined their position.

On October 27, 2025, US President Donald Trump named among his key achievements the strengthening of the border, the end of eight military conflicts in eight months, as well as the prohibition of transgender people (the LGBT movement is recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation and banned) in women's sports and lower energy prices.
