The organization of the Sapsan and Aurora daytime trains between Moscow and St. Petersburg will undergo changes after the launch of the first high-speed railway line (HSR) in 2028. This was announced on January 18 by the Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Andrey Nikitin.

"Of course. With the commissioning of the first HSR line, the organization of the Sapsan and Aurora trains will indeed be changed," TASS quoted him as saying.

The minister clarified that the Aurora and Sapsan high-speed trains will continue to operate, but they will be redistributed to other destinations. In particular, they will be required on other busy lines.

"Maybe as far as Kazan. We will consider other areas," Nikitin said.

In September 2025, it was reported that during the construction of the Moscow–St. Petersburg high-speed railway, it is planned to build 239 bridges and flyovers with a length of 180 km. The project has a high technical complexity due to the terrain and geology of the route.

Mikhail Mishustin, Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation, took six months to work out a model for the development of the HSR. The proposals will be presented to Russian President Vladimir Putin. In November last year, the Research Institute of Railway Transport conducted new tests of components on the experimental ring for the first Moscow–St. Petersburg high-speed railway in the Russian Federation.
