- Businessman Karapetyan was transferred from the Yerevan pre-trial detention center to house arrest
Russian businessman Samvel Karapetyan, who is accused in Armenia of calling for the overthrow of power in the republic and financial fraud, returned from the Yerevan detention center of the National Security Service under house arrest on January 18. Izvestia publishes the footage.
Dozens of citizens, despite the bad weather conditions, gathered to meet the businessman at his mansion in Yerevan. They greeted him with applause, chanting "Samvel."
Karapetyan's lawyer, Aram Vardevanyan, told Izvestia that such a development was expected, stressing that there were signs of illegality in the case.
"Any illegal act, even the biggest illegal act that takes place against Samvel Karapetyan, has a beginning and an end. <...> In the end, this political persecution will finally be completed," he said.
Law enforcement officers took Karapetyan, who was returned to the pre-trial detention center by a court decision on January 16, to the house, where he proceeded, waving to the crowd.
The businessman's nephew, Narek Karapetyan, announced on January 17 that Samvel Karapetyan would be released from custody in the near future. Karapetyan's detention became known on June 18 last year. He was charged with calling for the seizure of power in Armenia, after which he was arrested.
On July 3, the Armenian parliament adopted in the final reading laws allowing the nationalization of the company "Electric Networks of Armenia", which belonged to Karapetyan. The opposition expressed disagreement, considering the process illegal. On July 15, the opposition political parties of the Armenian parliament appealed to the Constitutional Court (CC) demanding that the law on the nationalization of Karapetyan's Electric Grids be declared unconstitutional.
On July 23, Karapetyan defeated the Armenian government in the International Arbitration Court in the case of the nationalization of the "Electric Grids of Armenia", which belonged to him. Later, on November 6, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan linked the order of nationalization of the "Electric Grids of Armenia" with their cost.
Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC) On November 17, Armenia signed a document on revoking the license of the Electric Networks of Armenia Company (ENA), which is owned by Karapetyan. Four out of five members of the commission voted for the relevant decision.
