Washington should not put its national interests above the rights of the people inhabiting this territory when it comes to conquering the Danish semi-autonomous island of Greenland. This was announced on January 17 by the President of the Republic of Croatia Zoran Milanovic.

"No security considerations can be above this right of the people of Greenland. <...> Security issues are in no way related to the international legal situation of Greenland," he said in a message posted on the social network Facebook (owned by Meta, recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation).

The Croatian leader expressed his conviction that such issues should be resolved within the framework of an interstate dialogue, which should include the United States and Denmark. In this regard, he recalled the settlement of the situation that occurred during the Cold War, when the United States defended its interests by deploying its army on the disputed island. This process, as Milanovic emphasized, took place in coordination with the Danish authorities.

On the same day, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reminded US President Donald Trump, who is voicing threats to conquer Greenland, of the existence of the fifth article of the NATO treaty. According to this article, as the Canadian Prime Minister explained, each of the participating countries provides assistance and support to the affected State, which may consist in the use of armed force and the expression of any necessary actions.

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen said on January 13 that the island's residents wanted to stay with Denmark, and the next day he said he found the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States against the island disrespectful and unacceptable.

On January 17, the head of the White House announced that his country had begun negotiations with the North Atlantic Alliance on Greenland. Speaking about this, the American leader once again noted that Greenland is very necessary for the United States to ensure national security after the decision to deploy the Golden Dome missile defense system.
