The probable cause of the gas explosion in the center of the Dutch city of Utrecht was a leak. This was reported on January 15 by the NOS TV channel with reference to the emergency services.

"A plan is currently being developed for a parking garage on Springweg so that people can pick up their cars later," the TV channel quoted a representative of the region's security service as saying.

He clarified that there have been no reports of missing persons yet. The fire is still being extinguished, but emergency services specialists are still unable to enter the building. Firefighters are now focused on finding people. Gas and electricity supplies in the affected area have been cut off, and an investigation is underway into the incident, with the official version currently being an accident.

The mayor of the city, Sharon Dijksma, reported earlier that day that significant damage had been caused to the city as a result of the explosions that occurred on Thursday in Utrecht, the number of victims is currently being clarified.
