- The Russian Foreign Ministry called the abduction of Maduro and any decisions of the US court illegal.
The kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro violates the international legal obligations of the United States, and any judicial decisions of Washington will also be illegal. This was announced on December 15 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"Even apart from the issue of the illegal use of armed force, the very fact of his abduction and detention grossly violates the international legal obligations of the United States. Any court decisions will be just as illegal, unless the American court recalls international law," the diplomat said at a briefing.
Zakharova added that the arguments that Maduro allegedly lost his immunity cannot be taken into account, since the politician was removed from his post during an illegal military operation.
"According to the generally recognized norms of international law based on the principle of sovereign equality of states, Nicolas Maduro, as head of state, has absolute immunity from the jurisdiction of the United States and any other state, except, of course, Venezuela," the diplomat said.
Earlier, on January 13, US President Donald Trump, commenting on the large-scale strike that his air force launched against Venezuela, called this operation, during which Maduro and his wife Celia Flores were captured, "the most impeccable" and "brilliant."
On January 10, one of the people guarding the Venezuelan president said that the US military had used secret weapons during the operation to capture the Venezuelan leader. Later, on January 12, The New York Times learned that the Venezuelan soldiers were not competent enough to handle the Russian S-300 air defense system, as well as the Buk complex.
