- The Russian FSB has identified a British agent who worked at the embassy in Moscow: details
The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has identified an employee of the British special services who operated in Moscow under the guise of diplomatic status, after which the Russian Foreign Ministry stripped him of his accreditation and ordered him to leave the country. This is the second such incident in the last year, which led to another diplomatic protest and a warning about a mirror response to any further escalation from London. All the details are in the Izvestia article.
What is known about the identified British agent
During the course of counterintelligence work, FSB officers identified an undeclared employee of the British special services, Davis Gareth Samuel, born in 1980. According to the FSB Public Relations Center, he was sent to Russia under the guise of being the second secretary of the administrative and economic department of the British Embassy in Moscow. On this basis, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs decided to revoke his diplomatic accreditation.
In addition, Davis Gareth Samuel was ordered to leave the territory of the Russian Federation within two weeks.
On the same day, January 15, British Charge d'affaires Dani Dolakia was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry and strongly protested the situation. It is reported that after a visit to the ministry, the British diplomat's car was briefly blocked by protesters.
How did the situation with British diplomats develop earlier
According to the FSB, this is not the first time that undeclared intelligence activities have been detected under the cover of the British embassy. In March last year, two diplomats, Second Secretary Alkesh Odedra and the wife of the first secretary of the political department, Michael Skinner, were also ordered to leave Russia within two weeks. Then the secret service stated that they were engaged in intelligence and subversive work that threatened the security of the state.
Even then, the Russian Foreign Ministry strongly protested to London, pointing out a violation of the legislation of the Russian Federation due to the submission of deliberately false information when obtaining an entry permit. The agency stressed that Russia will not tolerate the presence of undeclared foreign intelligence officers on its territory, and recommended providing only reliable information when applying for visas.
What kind of response might Russia give?
The Foreign Ministry warned that Moscow would give a mirror response if London continued to escalate the situation. This wording repeats the position voiced by the Russian Foreign Ministry in March 2024 after the previous incident. Experts note that such cases are becoming part of a complex diplomatic standoff between the countries.
It is reported that the expulsion of diplomats who worked undercover is a standard measure in international practice when disclosing the activities of foreign intelligence services. However, the sequence of such incidents indicates the ongoing tension in bilateral relations, which may lead to further restrictive steps on both sides.
