Former Congressman Billy Long, who was nominated by US President Donald Trump for the post of ambassador to Iceland, jokingly said that the country would become the 52nd American state. This was reported by the Politico newspaper on January 15.

"Former member of the House of Representatives Billy Long, Trump's nominee for the post of ambassador to Iceland, joked with members of Congress <...> that Iceland would be the 52nd state," the article says.

In addition, he added that in this case he would take the post of governor, the newspaper notes.

On January 3, the Iceland Cricket Association expressed joy at the fact that Trump would not be interested in Iceland due to the lack of minerals in the country. According to them, Venezuela has oil, Greenland has rare earth minerals, and Iceland only has volcanoes.

On January 4, Trump said that it would be beneficial for the European Union (EU) from the point of view of defense if the United States owned Greenland. The head of the government of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, indicated on the same day that he considered the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States regarding the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable.

The Daily Mail reported on January 10 that the United States Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) had received an order from Trump to prepare a detailed plan for an invasion of Greenland.
