- Meloni acknowledged the lack of a possible response in the event of the US annexation of Greenland.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Wednesday, January 14, taking part in a press conference dedicated to the beginning of 2026, said that she had no idea about Italy's actions in response to the potential annexation of Greenland by the United States.
During her speech, she emotionally asked rhetorical questions about the strategy that her state and its allies should adopt if the island were to pass to Washington. Meloni's proposals, as she admitted, were considered "wrong," so she appealed to her interlocutors to offer their options for responding.
"You have to formalize an alternative for me, you have to tell me what you intend to do, that is, we have to distance ourselves, in the sense that we have to: withdraw from NATO? Should we close the American bases? Should we sever trade ties? Should we attack McDonald's?" she asked.
After completing the list, the Italian Prime Minister summarized that she "does not know" what to do.
On January 14, the website of the Parliament of the European Union (EU) pointed out the need for the leaders of the member states of the alliance to identify concrete and tangible support for Greenland and Denmark. At the same time, it became known that Denmark began transferring military equipment and advanced units to the territory of its autonomous unit, whose residents want to remain with the kingdom.
Later, the Bild newspaper reported that Germany could send its military to the island, after a while, American leader Donald Trump reiterated that US relations with Denmark were "good", but Greenland was necessary for the United States to ensure national security, and a day earlier he called on the kingdom to "get out" of Greenland, saying that "two dog sleds," which, in his opinion, make up the entire island's defense, cannot cope with the United States.
