The EC announced plans to impose new sanctions against Iran
The European Union (EU) countries, amid large-scale protests in Iran, are discussing the introduction of new sanctions against Tehran and the recognition of the special forces of the Iranian army of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. This was announced on January 12 by the representative of the EU's Foreign policy service, Anwar al-Anuni, at a briefing in Brussels.
"We are preparing a proposal for stricter sanctions [against Iran]. Regarding the inclusion of [the IRGC] in the list of terrorist organizations, discussions between the [EU] member states continue in confidence and procedures are underway," he said, broadcast on the website of the European Commission (EC).
Al-Anuni added that he could not disclose the details of the restrictions or the recognition of the IRGC as terrorists. He explained that these decisions should be taken unanimously by all EU member states.
Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump said that if Iran attacks military or commercial facilities of the United States, Washington will launch unprecedented strikes against the republic. He added that his administration is considering a number of "very strong" military options against Iran, especially amid reports of violence against protesters inside the country. In addition, the American leader said that the Iranian authorities allegedly called on the United States to negotiate on the nuclear program, and a meeting is also possible between the parties.
