Tourists were blocked in the Finnish part of Lapland after flights were canceled due to a sharp drop in temperature to -37 degrees. This was reported by the Daily Mail on January 12.

"British tourists have told about their "nightmare" in Finnish Lapland, being among thousands of people stranded in the country after flights were cancelled due to severe frosts," the publication says.

Flights to London, Manchester, Paris and Amsterdam were cancelled due to bad weather. According to the newspaper, Kitillya Airport, which is located in Lapland, serves tourists by providing them with beds and meals. According to forecasts of the Finnish Meteorological Institute, in the future the temperature may drop sharply to almost -40 degrees.

In addition, heavy snowfall, gusty winds and icy roads exacerbated problems with local transport. One of the British tourists stuck at the airport called the situation a "nightmare." Another tourist also complained that due to flight cancellations from Lapland airport, "she will have to fly home from Helsinki."

The New York Times reported on January 7 that a large-scale transport collapse had occurred in Europe due to adverse weather conditions. It was clarified that the air hubs of Northern Europe were the most affected. At least five people have died in France as a result of the weather conditions, about a third of the country's territory has been placed on high weather alert, and new snowfalls are expected in the Netherlands and Belgium.
