The political scientist named a way for the United States to get Greenland.
Natalia Eremina, a professor at St. Petersburg State University, noted on January 12 in a conversation with Izvestia that the issue of Greenland had most likely already been resolved for American President Donald Trump.
"Different scenarios are being developed on how to implement this plan. It is obvious that the United States does not intend to abandon the inclusion of Greenland in its composition. Denmark and the EU will try to delay the negotiations as long as possible," the political scientist believes.
According to the expert, they have no options and opportunities for confrontation.
"When the United States feels that the enemy is weaker than them, they act brazenly and impudently. When there is a chance that the enemy can put up decent resistance, then they begin to calculate the risks and opportunities," the expert is sure.
She recalled that issues related to the international agenda are being put to a referendum in Greenland.
"So the island has an opportunity to have its say. This was the case when Greenland withdrew from the European Economic Community in 1985, while Denmark remained in it. And now Denmark is a member of the EU, while Greenland, an integral part of the kingdom, is not. This nuance speaks volumes," the analyst believes.
In her opinion, the task of Trump and his administration is to hold such a referendum.
"The population there is small, and the Americans will be able to offer every Greenlander some benefits," Yeremena summed up.
Trump first announced the idea of buying Greenland in 2019, and in December 2024 he again announced his desire to include the island in the United States.
On January 11, he announced that Washington would "one way or another" take control of Greenland. According to him, if the United States does not do this, Russia or China will take the island.
The Danish leadership rejects the idea of selling its autonomous territory, but they hint that they are not against expanding cooperation with Washington.
