American leader Donald Trump said that NATO would not exist if he were not the president of the United States. This was reported on January 9 by The Guardian newspaper.

"You wouldn't have NATO if I wasn't president," Trump pointed out.

Such a statement was made against the background of discussions about the acquisition of Greenland by the United States. The publication notes that the American leader has long shown interest in the autonomous Arctic territory, publicly putting forward the idea of acquiring it in 2019 during his first presidency.

On January 4, Trump said that it would be beneficial for the European Union (EU) from a defense point of view if the United States owned Greenland. The head of the government of Greenland, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, indicated on the same day that he considered the "repeated rhetoric" of the United States regarding the island to be disrespectful and unacceptable.

The Daily Mail reported on January 10 that the United States Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) had received an order from Trump to prepare a detailed plan for an invasion of Greenland.

Former French President Francois Hollande said on January 11 that US military action against Greenland would be the end of NATO. He added that the United States "should not do anything about Greenland, especially by military means."
