In Brasilli, a fisherman caught an arapaima that can breathe air, weighing 160 kg.
A 53-year-old Brazilian fisherman caught a giant arapaima in the Marineiro River in the state of Sao Paulo, which is 2.5 m long and weighs 160 kg. This was announced on January 26 by the publication Diário do Litoral.
One of the features of this type of fish is the ability to breathe air. This allows individuals to exist in reservoirs with extremely low oxygen content, periodically rising to the surface of the water.
At the same time, the species is invasive. Outside of its traditional habitat, it can cause significant damage to local ecosystems.
"Since there are no natural predators in these regions capable of containing the spread, its population may grow uncontrollably," the publication says.
It is noted that arapaim can reach a length of up to 3 m and a mass of up to 200 kg. Fish meat is popular in regional cuisine, and accessories are made from other parts of the carcass.
"In addition to their culinary value, their skin is valued in the luxury fashion industry for making accessories," the newspaper notes.
Earlier, on December 4, fishermen in India pulled a nine—meter whale shark weighing about 5 tons onto the shore with a catch - it took almost 100 people. It was the first time such a large specimen was caught in these places. This aroused interest among tourists and locals, who began to flock to the beach en masse to take pictures against the background of this unique specimen.
