Applying perfume to exposed areas of the skin can increase the risk of DNA damage and skin cancer. About this on January 11, "Gazeta.Ru" was told by Ekaterina Safonova, a therapist at the CMD clinic.

"The photosensitivity of perfume ingredients is perhaps the most significant factor that can indirectly link perfume to an increased risk of skin damage and, as a result, to a potential increased risk of cancer," the doctor noted.

She clarified that both natural and synthetic components of perfumes, such as citrus oils, sandalwood or musk, can become photosensitizers when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Safonova emphasized that repeated and chronic DNA damage by UV rays is the main cause of skin cancer.

"If perfume contains photosensitizing components and is applied to skin areas exposed to the sun, it can potentiate the harmful effects of UV rays, increasing the risk of mutations and, over time, the development of malignant neoplasms," the doctor added.

To minimize the risks, she recommended applying perfume to clothes or using sunscreen on exposed skin.

Earlier, on November 28, 2025, it was reported that the cosmetics and perfumery market in Russia is going through a transition period. Customers are more likely to choose mass-market products, but they do not give up on care and premium cosmetics. Perfume, like decorative cosmetics, falls under the economy, but many consumers prefer to purchase full-size expensive bottles every six months.
