Residents of Russia celebrate the Old New Year due to the difference in calendars. This was announced on January 11 by the head of the information service of the Moscow Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church, Priest Alexander Volkov.

"We live in a situation of two calendars. <...> The church calendar differs by 13 days. Since Russian people love different celebrations, the Old New Year according to the Julian calendar, on the night of January 13-14, has become an additional pleasant holiday for many," RIA Novosti quoted the agency as saying.

The difference in calendars occurred in 1918. when the new style of chronology was adopted — the Gregorian calendar. The difference between the Gregorian calendar and the Julian calendar is 13 days.

The priest noted that there is nothing wrong with this holiday.
